Orion Travel Insurance follows global travel advisories keep travellers safe
At this time, the federal government of Canada, strongly advises against all but essential travel outside of Canada until further notice. Please see the official Global Affairs Canada travel advisories for more details.
While it is up to the individual traveller to determine what qualifies as "essential" travel, the message is clear – it remains unsafe to travel at this time. Orion Travel Insurance is keeping travellers safe by encouraging Canadians to stay home while “Avoid non-essential travel” or “Avoid all travel” advisories remain in effect.
If travellers do plan to travel outside of Canada while current Global Affairs Canada travel advisories are in effect, below are some key considerations to help make informed decisions about leaving Canada:
- It could be difficult for Canadians to access medical care while destinations experience significant increases in COVID cases, and health services become strained.
- Repatriating Canadians back to a Canadian hospital could be challenging – particularly if ICU facilities at home become strained, and travellers are receiving appropriate care at destination.
- There may be challenges obtaining air ambulance transportation for COVID cases due to safety protocols for employees.
Orion has always monitored global travel advisories and does its best to inform travellers who may be affected ahead of time to keep them safe. Orion’s travel insurance policy follows government travel advisories for the very same reason – to keep travellers safe. Based on the current global travel advisory, our travel insurance policy offers the following:
Emergency medical insurance and Trip cancellation and interruption coverage
Orion does cover COVID-related illnesses, cancellations or interruptions when Canadian travel advisories are either “Exercise normal security precautions” or “Exercise a high degree of caution,” on the date of departure or date of travel insurance purchase (policy terms and conditions would apply).
Orion does not cover COVID-related illnesses, cancellations, or interruptions when travel advisories are either “Avoid non-essential travel” or “Avoid all travel” on the date of departure or date of travel insurance purchase.
Other emergency illnesses or medical issues, cancellations, or interruptions unrelated to COVID are eligible for coverage based on terms and conditions of the policy.
